The Matra Mountains are part of the Northern Mountain Range and belong by origin to the largest young volcanic zone of Europe. They are situated between the valleys of River Tarna and River Zagyva. Although this mountain range is not of the largest area, the two highest peaks of the country can be found here: Kékes rises to 1014 m and Galyatető to 964 m.

The seasons offer yet another dimension to the landscape. With vast, dense forests to cut through in spring and summer, wonderful colours of the woods in autumn and crisp, snow covered stillness in winter.
For those seeking action and adventure there are go karts and dune buggies, balloon flights and paragliding plus many other activities.
For families the are water parks, castles, thermal baths to visit.
For those looking to relax you can't beat the spectacular views and abundance of wildlife in the area. This mountain range of varied surfaces abounds in species. The flora and fauna of the National Park is very rich with many protected and rare species of plants, insects and birds. The Matra Mountains provide a natural habitat for several alpine species such as the red-flowered, thornless Alpine Rose (Rosa pendulina) and the blue-flowered Alpine Clematis (Clematis alpina).
If you enjoy painting or sketching there is plenty to get the creative juices flowing and with the ability to just walk into the country side from both sets of accommodation you are free to do as you please.
